WEST SEATTLE, Washington, June 3, 2009 (WSFB) – Residents of West Seattle were attacked by relentless heat Wednesday as temperatures soared into the 80’s and many suffered from dehydration due to nobody telling them what to do.
“I rely on the news to tell me when it’s hot and then what I should do about it,” local resident Marco Rotunda told the WSFB. ”I missed the news today and now I have no idea what to do. Do I stay in the sun or out of it? Do I drink water or not? What about my dog? It’s so hot but I don’t understand what the next step is.”
Every year residents of West Seattle are caught off guard by mid 80’s tempurtures and turn to local media to provide them with vital, lifesaving tips on keeping cool, staying out of the sun, and what to do with children and animals when the sun attacks. Yet every year people suffer from dehydration and heat related illness due to not watching the news.
Without the tips from the news residents of West Seattle are left to their own common sense, which often results in a trip to the Emergency Room. If they finally realize what they should do it’s often too late to buy a fan because they are all sold out at Home Depot.
“The news tells us what we need to do to take care of ourselves, I never buy a fan until the news tells me that it is time. Thank you news,” Rotunda said.
The city of Seattle will begin to look into how better to communicate Sun awareness to the community. Some police were seen providing hand outs to visibly hot citizens and PoSM’s that showed a picture of the sun equalling the word “HOT”.
